Ricky is the very proud owner of Alive Surf School. As a true Portrush boy he grew up surfing every day, usually at West Strand, and has been in love with surfing, the sea, the beach and everything in between for a long time. He was a body boarder on the Irish surf Team for 4 years and was lucky enough to compete at European level. After studying at University in Glasgow he moved to Bondi beach in Sydney, Australia, where he lived for five years before coming home, taking over Alive and starting a family
Ricky is a massive believer that surfing should be enjoyed by everyone of all ages, fitness levels and abilities. He is especially keen to use the sport, and Alive Surf School, to help people from socially disadvantaged backgrounds as well as those with physical and learning difficulties to try something totally knew – hopefully giving them an experience they will never forget. He tries to epitomise the surf schools philosophy – BE SAFE AND HAVE FUN!!
Hanno encapsulates everything that is great about surfing! He learned to surf in the mecca of Hawaii (helped by the fact he is a three x world champion snake-boarder) and having taken on their true spirit of the ocean he is very rarely seen on land. Hanno has ran surf schools in Brazil, Morrocco, Hawaii and Spain, he is one of the most experienced surfing instructors in Ireland.
Hanno has been instrumental in setting up Alive’s Autism program and is currently working on making surfing more inclusive for people with physical diabilities.
When not in the water surfing Hanno loves to go free-diving and enjoys hanging out with his beautiful family.
Johnny has been with Alive for three years and is probably the most dedicated surfing instructor in the country! Johnny loves giving surfing lessons and working with people of all ages and from all backgrounds.
Currently studying a Sports Science degree in Belfast he is one of the most promising people involved with sport in Northern Ireland. Johnny is a rugby coach, hockey coach and football coach when he is not on the beach and has recently been accepted into a placement to coach rugby in one of new Zealands top schools (which happens to be right beside some awesome waves!). Big things are expected of this young man and we are really happy to have him on board with Alive!
